Obituary for Charles McLean Carr
Charles McLean Carr, Jr. died at his home in Jackson, Mississippi on January 10, 2018. Born in Ft. Worth, Texas to Ruthe ( McKinnon) and Charles McLean Carr on August 27, 1931, he is survived by his wife Jane, two sons, Charles III (Holly) of Houston, Texas, John Edward of London, England, and two granddaughters, Emma Katherine and Sarah Grace Carr both of Houston. He is also survived by his two nieces, Lorna Doone (Scott) Archer and their three children, Sarah McLean, John Hobart (Jack) and Robert Reaves of Jackson; Dorothy Ruth (Fritz) Smith and children, Preece and Virginia Ruth of Charlotte, North Carolina. He was predeceased by his sister, Lorna Doone “Doonie” and her husband, Hobart Hector of Jackson. Charlie grew up in Ocean Springs, Mississippi in a rambling clapboard house set amidst pecan trees. Also included was a family tennis court where impromptu gatherings were frequently held. The old town itself enjoyed a somewhat cosmopolitan milieu of locals, retired military and Chicagoans lured by the Illinois Central railroad to its relaxed coastal atmosphere, that fleeting era being lost now in its long ago time frame. Charlie graduated from the Gulf Coast Military Academy in 1949 as a varsity football player, tennis and track team member. That following September he entered the University of Mississippi, joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was awarded a Liberal Arts degree in 1952. Continuing on to the school of Law, he graduated in the fall of 1954. Charlie joined the U. S. Army in 1954 as a Second Lieutenant in the infantry where he served in Germany and was later assigned to the Judge Advocate General Corps. Leaving the service in 1956, he began his career with Stanolin Oil Company (later Amoco) in early 1957 as a landman in its New Orleans office. In 1968 a transfer to Amoco International Oil Company sent him to Chicago for reassignment as a contract negotiator for exploration agreements in Europe, South America and West African countries. Later the company selected him to preside as president and general manager over three of Amoco’s largest subsidiary companies with operations in Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom and Egypt where the family enjoyed a variety of cultural opportunities while residing in Port of Spain, London and Cairo respectively. Charlie met his wife, Jane Zoder in New Orleans in 1959, and they were married in 1961.Retiring in 1992, Jane and Charlie moved from London to Jackson, which has remained their home until his death. After retirement Charlie served on the boards of directors of companies located in Canada, England and Jackson. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Jackson. Many years of golf and camaraderie at the Jackson Country Club were very much enjoyed. Trips abroad and weeks of countless summers spent in Maine were added pleasures in his long and happy life. The family would like to thank his caregivers Patricia Manning, Annette Dollison and Lolita Jackson as well as the staff, nurses and aids at St. Catherine’s Village for their kindness and devoted care during his illness. A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13th, visitation in Oakridge Hall at 10:00 a.m. Family requests no flowers, a charity of choice if desired.
