Obituary for Carolyn Sistrunk Galloway
Carolyn Sistrunk Galloway, age 75, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 15, 2022.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Katherine Winfield Harris and Willie D. Sistrunk; sisters, Jo Bennett and Nelda Chesney, and her grandson, Hunter Smith.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Hervey “Bubba” Galloway; her brother, Wilson Sistrunk (Nell); her daughter, Kimberly Hearn (Russell); her son, Michael Smith (Cissy); her stepsons, Chuck Galloway (Karen), Bill Galloway (Robin), Andy Galloway (Hope); eleven grandchildren, Garrett Hearn, Lauren Hobson (Anthony), Anna Carole Evans (Parker), Kyle Michael Millican, Tucker Millican, Samantha Galloway, Will Galloway, Shelby Rainey, Sophie Rainey, Rebecca Galloway, Faith Galloway, Drew Galloway, and Matthew Galloway; and seven great-grandchildren, Presleigh McClellan, Ella James McClellan, Grey Hobson, Hunt Evans, Vaiden Evans, Kai Galloway and Phoenix Galloway. Carolyn is also survived by her nephews, many great-nieces and great-nephews, and too many friends to count.
Carolyn was known by her tennis friends as “Bedazzled.” She spent much of her time on a tennis court, and she looked forward to taking trips to the lake with her tennis friends. She loved pretty, shiny, and sparkly, and she was all of those. Some of us affectionately called her “Ms. Gal.” Some lovingly called her “My Friend.”
But more than anything, she loved being called “Mama” and “Mim.” Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family were the delights of her life, and she gave them her time, her advice, her knowledge, her savvy. From pageants to rodeos, Carolyn invested in their activities and in them. Their school-lives, relationships, careers, dreams and desires were important to her, and she showed them so by always being present and interested. She made each one feel uniquely special in ways only she could.
Carolyn stood beside Bubba as his wife, and she worked beside him on the farm as his partner, never afraid to do what needed to be done, even if that meant in their earlier years pulling cotton trailers or helping bottle feed baby calves. Carolyn and Bubba were devoted to each other, and they took care of each other. They were active members of First Baptist Church, and she served in the preschool and children’s ministry for decades. She loved Jesus, and she loved those babies.
She was a master negotiator, and she almost always was successful! A staunch advocate for the people she loved, she unabashedly spoke her mind. If she was on your team, she was your biggest ally, and you were mighty lucky. Carolyn embodied Proverbs 31:25. She left indelible marks on her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends whom she loved and who loved her, ensuring that though she no longer walks among us, she leaves a piece of herself with each one—her faith, her grace, her dignity and strength, and all of us are better for it.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice Ministries for their love and care of all of them, but especially of Carolyn, during her time spent there.
Memorials may be made to Blair E. Batson Hospital and First Baptist Church, Canton, preschool/ children’s ministry.
