Obituary for Caroline Wilson Tannehill
Caroline Wilson Tannehill, age 95, passed away on December 28, 2020.
Born in Jackson MS in 1925, her parents were George Rice Wilson Sr. of Conway AR, and Mary Brown Ashford Wilson of Memphis TN. She lived in the Jackson area for most of her life, starting school at Davis Elementary and graduating from Forrest Hills High.
She always had a book in her hand. She loved learning and had a lifelong commitment to education, attending Millsaps College, Mississippi College for Women, and graduating from University of Southern Mississippi in 1947. She continued post-graduate studies throughout her teaching career, earning an MA in Elementary Education from Mississippi College and Library Science Certification from USM. She retired from Jackson Public Schools after 26 years in elementary education.
After an abbreviated marriage to Joseph Clebourne Royalty, she raised three children as a single parent and later in life was caregiver to her mother. She was known for her kindness, positive attitude, independence, and resourcefulness. She enjoyed projects and mastered the art of re-purposing. Her family learned to never move or throw away an item of hers that 'appeared' random or useless.
In 1982, she married Hannon Tisdale Tannehill and restarted life in retirement with travel adventures throughout the country and the world, including RV camping, cruising and touring. At home, she enjoyed the outdoors, cultural programs and exercise class. She was a lifelong member of Galloway United Methodist Church and participated in educational and civic organizations including United Methodist Women's Circle, Pilot Club, Kappa Delta sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, and Boy Scouts.
For the past 6 years, she lived at the Orchard Retirement Community in Ridgeland MS where she led exercise class, read and spent quality time with her family in Madison MS and kept close ties with family across the country.
She is predeceased by her parents , husband, son Donald Royalty(Kathy), brother G. Rice Wilson Jr. (Charlene) and sister Thelma Crumley.
She is survived by her son Joseph Royalty (Connie) of Madison MS; daughter Janet Royalty (Leslie Brant) of Atlanta GA; nephew Dr. George 'Skip' Wilson (Judy) of Fernandina Beach FL; niece 'Suzie' Wilson Davidson (Buck) of Clearview FL; grandchildren Daxx Kaufman (Jessica) , Natasha Tanner (Stephen) , Mary Ann Royalty (Robert) of Greater Houston TX, and a wealth of great-grandchildren and extended family.
She will be buried alongside family members at Lakewood Memorial Cemetary. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences are welcomed at Sebrell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, any memorials may be made in her name to Galloway United Methodist Church, Jackson MS.
