Byron William Hughes, 77, passed away on October 22, 2022. Byron was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on November 8, 1945 to parents Byron B. “B.B.” Hughes and Francis Cosette Hughes. His grandparents were John Franklin and Hattie Hughes of Pond Creek, Oklahoma and William and Lorena Turner of Duncan, Mississippi. He grew up in Merigold and is a graduate of Cleveland High School. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1968 and received a Juris Doctor degree from Mississippi College School of Law in 1971. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clinton, Mississippi.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by and loved his two children, Jennifer Ramsey (Chad Ramsey) of Clinton, Mississippi and Stephanie Baird (Fortson Baird) of Madison, Mississippi. His brother is Cary Hughes (Marsha Hughes) who lives in Monroe, Louisiana. He has 5 grandchildren: Dallas, a college freshman, Presley in fifth grade, Will in fourth grade, Walker in third grade, and Weston in second grade. His two nephews are Andrew Hughes and Jonathan Hughes who are both married with children and live in Texas.
His career included working as an attorney, a certified real estate appraiser, teacher, and an independent landman for Byron Oil Exploration Company in the late 1970s and 1980s. He worked as a child support enforcement attorney at the Mississippi Department of Human Services for many years; he retired from the State of Mississippi. He continued to work as an oilman after his retirement. He was an active member of the Mississippi Bar, The Mississippi Association of Landmen, and many lawyer associations in Jackson, Mississippi. He enjoyed writing and acting; he was in a number of independent film projects. There will be a private graveside service at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland, Mississippi. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
