Obituary for Byron Thomas Hetrick
Byron Thomas Hetrick passed away peacefully on Palm Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron Starrett Hetrick and Katherine Moses Hetrick, and his first wife, Sue Anne Traylor Hetrick, who passed in 1970. In 1971, he married Buddie Louise Perkins Hetrick, who embraced him and his children, and the two went on to celebrate 46 years of marriage. Thomas, born January 11, 1932, graduated from Saint Joseph Catholic School in 1950. He was active in the Boys Scouts of America, and earned his Eagle Scout Award. Thomas went on to earn his Bachelors Degree from Millsaps College, funding his education with a paper route he threw from his bicycle. He joined the Army in 1953 and served in Japan. He returned home, married Sue Anne, and graduated from Jackson School of Law. He went on to work as a real estate closing attorney, retiring in 2000. In addition to square dancing with Louise, Thomas enjoyed wood-working, once building a workshop at his long-time home in Belhaven. Thomas began the first Religious Education Program at The Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle in 1972, at the behest of Sue Anne prior to her death. A loving, caring and attentive husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Louise; two children, Bill Hetrick (Marilyn), and Lucy Hetrick (Dos); two step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Ronie (Joey) and Sara Miller; sisters-in-law Linda Jennings (Hiram); and Sandra Thomas and nephews Benjamin Thomas and Jacob Thomas. Funeral services will be held at The Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle in Jackson on Wednesday, March 28, at 10 am. Visitation will begin at 8:30 am on Wednesday. Interment will be afterwards at Cedarlawn Cemetery in Jackson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Religious Education Program at St. Peter’s.
