SHE MOVED TO ST. LOUIS AS A TEEN AND WORKED THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL. SHE PAID A NICKEL FOR A BUS TICKET ACROSS TOWN, WHERE SHE WORKED AT A DRY CLEANER’S FOR 50 CENTS AN HOUR. SHE EVEN DID A LITTLE MODELING. SHE EXCELLED IN SCHOOL -- MADE STRAIGHT A’S -- AND WAS A GOOD ATHLETE, ARTIST AND PAINTER.

THEY MARRIED, AND WENT ON TO HAVE 7 CHILDREN AND A HOST OF GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN. HER FIRST FIVE CHILDREN WEREN’T MUCH MORE THAN A YEAR APART. WHEN ASKED HOW SHE DID IT, SHE WOULD REPLY, “IT WAS SO MUCH WORK, WHAT WAS ONE MORE?”
AS HER CHILDREN GOT OLDER, SHE BEGAN WORKING AND WAS ELECTED TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF KANKAKEE COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS.

IN MID-LIFE, SHE WENT TO COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL WITH HER DAUGHTER, BEKI. SHE MADE A GREAT CAREER OUT OF IT. FIRST, OWNING HER OWN SALON, MR. JAY’S, IN SLIDELL, LOUISIANA, THEN WORKING FOR THE REGIS CORPORATION, MOVING INTO MANAGEMENT AND A JOB THAT WOULD TAKE HER AROUND THE WORLD -- FROM LONDON AND PARIS AND ROME TO THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA AND TURKEY AND SEEMINGLY EVERYWHERE IN BETWEEN.
SHE AND JAMES MEADE DIVORCED LATER IN LIFE, BUT SHE SOON FOUND LOVE AGAIN WITH MISSISSIPPI NATIVE AND BUSINESSMAN, ED HENDON. THEY WERE HAPPILY MARRIED FOR 18 YEARS.

SHE SPENT THE LAST YEARS OF HER LIFE IN BRANDON, AND WORKED AT A SALON UNTIL SHE WAS NEARLY 80 YEARS OLD. SAGE AND SWEET, SHE WAS BELOVED BY HER FAMILY, FRIENDS, CO-WORKERS AND ANYONE LUCKY ENOUGH TO KNOW HER. THOSE WHO DID, KNOW SHE LOVED CURRENT EVENTS, REESE’S CUPS, STRAWBERRY FLOATS AND PLAYING GIN RUMMY WITH FAMILY. FUNNY AND QUICK-WITTED, SHE LOVED TO TEASE AND PLAY JOKES ON HER HUSBAND. EASY TO LAUGH AND SEE THE HUMOR IN ALMOST ANY SITUATION -- SHE WAS A DELIGHT TO BE AROUND.
