Obituary for Betty West Nicholas
Betty West Nicholas died on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 88.
A native of Cotton Plant, Arkansas and born October 14, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Marvin C. West, Sr. and the late Lewis Taylor West.
It was love at first sight for Don Nicholas, who at the time was a young U.S. soldier, when he first saw Betty at the age of 17. They married and had their children over the course of the next several years. Betty was a devoted and loving wife and mother who, while raising and caring for her children, also ran the family business, Nicholas Acoustics & Specialty Co., with Don. Betty created a home that was family-centered. She became a second mom to many of her children’s friends who would gravitate toward the Nicholas family home due to Betty’s naturally loving and hospitable nature. She had the ability to make everyone feel welcome and loved; her gifts also extended to being a delightful hostess and a fantastic cook.
Betty was a longtime member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church. Always devoted to family, one of her greatest pleasures was spending time on the beach with them.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Nicholas Parks and a brother, Marvin West, Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Don E. Nicholas; sons, Terry Nicholas (Emily), David Nicholas (JoLynn), and Mark Nicholas (Alice); son-in-law, Don Parks; grandchildren: Jennifer Holloman (Nick), Allison Cook, Adam Parks, Katie Evans (Chas), Audra Stanton (Patrick), Molly Savage (Adam), Matthew Nicholas, Betsy Kate Nicholas, Taylor Nicholas (Katie), Reed Nicholas (Maris), and Jamey Nicholas (Mary Hampton); 20 great grandchildren; her devoted friends from childhood, Billy & Polly Swan and Peggy Caroll; and a host of other relatives.
A private graveside service for family will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Those who would like to offer words of comfort and condolences to Betty’s family are encouraged to submit through Betty’s tribute page at www.sebrellfuneralhome.com.
The family wishes to thank Jessica Brown and Anita Hoskins for their compassionate care and comfort provided to Betty in recent months.
Memorials can be made to St. Matthews Methodist Church.
