Bettie Jewell (Musgrove) Dixon was born July 15, 1950 in Soso, Mississippi to the late Willis and Christine Musgrove. She was the youngest of two children.
Bettie was a proud graduate of the Oak Park High School Class of 1969 serving as Miss Oak Park High School. Attending public school in Laurel, Mississippi, she was an esteemed honor student at every grade level. She met her husband, Earnest, in the 5th grade at Nora Davis Elementary School. They developed a strong friendship that would remain steadfast for over 50 years. They were married in an intimate ceremony in the pastor’s living room at the parsonage of St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church on August 30, 1969. Little did they know, this union would result in 4 children, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and a lifetime journey that would span over the course of 52 years.
This Omega Psi Phi Sweetheart attended Jackson State University where she majored in Education. Upon graduation, Bettie taught overseas in the Department of Defense Schools (DoDEA) in Germany, as well as several school districts across the United States. Bettie was extremely influential in the academic and personal lives of countless students. She also served as the President of the Oak Park Alumni Chapter of Washington, D.C.
Bettie shined as a First Lady of Utica Institute Baptist Church in Utica, Mississippi. She demonstrated exceptional character, manifested in love, joy, peace, gentleness, patience, self control, meekness, and faith. She had a radiant smile and her laughter was simply contagious. Known as “Betty Boop'' to her beloved brother and “Sister” to friends and family, she exemplified what it truly meant to be a lady. There was no end to her generosity towards those she loved. She always saw the best in others, believed in their potential, even when they could not see it for themselves.
