Obituary for Beth Nichols Gittins
Beth Nichols Gittins Jackson Native Jacksonian Elizabeth Grace Nichols Gittins overcame a longtime illness October 23rd and took her seat next to her parents and other loved ones in the Kingdom of Heaven. Her family rejoices in her freedom. Beth, 54, is survived by her husband, Bill Gittins. She is the daughter of the late, Maudie and Bob Nichols of Jackson. Her mother chose to call her Beth. Fortuitously, it was her middle name, Grace, that defined how she lived her life. Beth was the youngest of a spirited brood of five children growing up in the 1970's in the wilds of northeast Jackson, affectionately known as Leftover. She endured the torture of her older siblings all the while maintaining favored status as the fair-haired baby who could do no wrong. To compensate for her challenging childhood as low man on the totem pole, she became an accomplished equestrian. In her spare time, she humored her parents by attending and graduating from Jackson Prep and then Millsaps College, making lifelong friends who remain loyal and loving. After college and a fanciful season as a debutante, she found her great adventure by moving to Washington, DC where she interned for Sen. Thad Cochran. Beth loved playing a role at the 1988 Republican presidential convention in New Orleans and the inauguration of President George H.W. Bush. She received appointments to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Peace Corps, and the USDA. She returned to Jackson in the early 90's, married Bill and began her happily ever after with an ever-present herd of cats. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Andrews Cathedral and belonged to the Junior League of Jackson and the DAR. Beth conquered the restrictions of a disease with no cure. She laughed deeply and joyously. She was a friend to all and a role model of strength during adversity. She smiled, she loved, she lived. The family wants to thank her selfless friend and caregiver of 16 years, Gladys Cooper, for her gentle care, love and devotion to Beth. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three sisters and brother: Tiffany Nichols Grant of Madison, Rob Nichols and his wife, Diana, of Mobile, AL, Marsh Nichols of Nashville, TN, Alison Nichols and her husband, Bill Mudd, of Birmingham, AL. She is survived by Bill's children, Joanne Schmidt and Shawn Gittins, as well as several nieces and nephews and Bill's grandchildren. Services will be held Friday, October 28th at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Andrews with family visitation at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mississippi, St. Andrews Cathedral or the not for profit of your choice.
