Obituary for Benjamin H Ticknor, III
Benjamin Holt Ticknor III, age 85 passed away peacefully in his home in Brandon, MS on May 31, 2020. He was born in New York, New York on August 6, 1934 to Benjamin Holt Ticknor II and Barbara (Farmer) Ticknor. He grew up in New Jersey and graduated Milton Academy, MA in 1952. He attended Yale University from 1952-1954. He then served in the Air Force from 1955-1956. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Yale graduating in 1958 with a BA in Psychology. He earned a MSW in 1960 from Simmons College.
Over the course of his 40 year career in mental health he worked as a clinical social worker, psychotherapist, family therapist and program director in multiple inpatient and outpatient facilities in New York, Maine, and Connecticut. His clinical skills and conscientious, non-judgmental style were and asset in his field. His life was dedicated to serving others. He moved from CT to MS in 2013 to be closer to family and to escape the cold.
Survived by his wife of 34 years, Cheryl Tanner Marsh; daughters Lisa Alexandra (Michael) Lindsay-Hogg; Tracey (Matthew) Schreiner; Amanda (Andrew) Combs; Beula (James) Kavoussi and their mother Alexandra Switaj; Step-son Robert Marsh; grandchildren Jane Maude Mosely, Audrey Schreiner (Alex) Hickox, William Schreiner, Joshua (Emilee) Combs; Lauren Combs, Benjamin Kavoussi, Aaron Marsh, Devin Marsh, and Austin Harris; brothers , Malcolm (Susan) Ticknor, Michael Ticknor and George (Kathy) Ticknor and Multiple nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents, Benjamin H. Ticknor II, Barbara Farmer Ticknor; brother, Thomas Ticknor; and granddaughter Kathryn Grace Combs.
Ben had a deep and genuine curiosity and love of learning. In addition to maintaining his professional education he delved into science, astronomy, quantum physics and quantum mechanics. No topic was too big or too small for him to explore. He had a life- long love of music; especially jazz, classical, and world music. Later in life he enjoyed ballroom dancing. He joined the Catholic Church in 1987. In 2002 he completed a four year program of Advanced Biblical Studies at the Catholic Biblical School. He grew in love of God and spiritual growth through his church attendance, prayer life, reading, lectures, and conferences. He was an active member of ACtheals, a professional organization that integrates the healing ministry of Jesus with one’s professional practice and the Knights Of Columbus Council No: 10216.
Ben was a loving, kind and gentle man, mild mannered but never bland. While striving to be his authentic self he encouraged others to be their true self. He loved good food and was an excellent cook. He was known to empty everyone’s plate. He will be remembered for his “dad Jokes”, true groaners that even entertained his grandchildren.
A private Memorial Mass will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church in Flowood with interment in Connecticut at a later date.
