Beatrice Looney Donley (Bee), retired educator, died on Thursday, January 25, 2018, in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Visitation is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2018 in Fowler Hall at St. James Episcopal Church and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2018 in Oak Ridge Hall before the service at St. James at 11:00 a.m.
Mrs. Donley grew up in Drew, Mississippi, and Columbia, Tennessee. She graduated from LSU and did M.S. graduate work at Mississippi College and the University of Mississippi.
Mrs. Donley was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Avent Looney, by her brother, Marine Capt. Thomas Avent Looney, Jr., and by her husband Robert Vance Donley. She is survived by her four children, Jami (Paul Templet), of Taos, NM; Robert (Sandy), of Philadelphia, MS; Rick (Pat O'Brien), of Weaverville, NC; and Deveaux (Greg Duckworth) of Belmont, MA; and nine grandchildren, Nicholas Donley, Lauren Donley, Rushton Templet, Sebastian Templet, Avent Donley, Chloe Donley, Madison Donley, Greer Duckworth, and Key Duckworth.
Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal School, 370 Old Agency Rd, Ridgeland, MS 39157 or to St. James Episcopal Church, 3921 Oakridge Dr., Jackson, MS 39216.
After her husband's death, Mrs. Donley taught college English and history for Universities Center before teaching high school English at Murrah and Brinkley. She taught English at St. Andrews for 25 years and served as Director of Admissions for 11 years. The Beatrice Donley Award for Excellence in Mississippi Writers is given each year in her honor.
In 2012, Mrs. Donley published a book of poetry, Mostly Ghosts, followed by Mostly Mississippi in 2014 and Mostly Today in 2016.
