Obituary for Barney Roy DeLaughter, Jr
Barney Roy DeLaughter, Jr., joined his beloved Billie Friday, April 13, 2018 at his home in Clinton, MS. He was 85 years of age. “Papa,” as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren called him, was a member of Oak Forest Baptist Church for fifty years, where he taught Sunday school in the youth department. He joined the congregation at Wildwood Baptist Church after moving to Clinton. He served as a deacon at both churches. Mr. DeLaughter was born in Bude, MS, but lived most of his life in Jackson, MS. He was a graduate of Jackson Central High School and Hinds Junior College. He excelled in sports, particularly as a baseball catcher in high school, as well as the local American Legion and semi-pro leagues. For decades during his adult life, he was an avid golfer and tennis player. Mr. DeLaughter coached youth baseball teams for many seasons and served on the YMCA board of directors. His love of sports never faded. He was an ardent fan of the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Ole Miss Rebels. Mr. DeLaughter proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, and was active in civic affairs. He loved fraternizing with friends and fellow members of the Exchange Club and Moose Lodge. He was blessed with a gift for conversation on a wide variety of subjects, which he put to good use in his sales representative career, upon which he embarked after his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, beginning in the ad department of the “State Times” newspaper in Jackson. The quintessential salesman was salesperson of the year for both the Bostitch and the Atlantic Envelope companies. Mr. DeLaughter was preceded in death by his wife Billie Newman Burt DeLaughter; by his parents, Barney Roy DeLaughter, Sr. and Ruth Tumlin DeLaughter; by his grandparents, Thomas Jefferson and Annie DeLaughter, and George Pierce and Annie Laurie Tumlin. He is survived by two sons: Bobby Burt DeLaughter, Sr. (wife Peggy) of New Orleans, LA and Michael Roy DeLaughter (wife Renee’) of Clinton, MS; by five grandchildren: Bobby Burt DeLaughter, Jr. of Hernando, MS, James Anthony DeLaughter (wife Christi) of Brandon, MS, William Alan DeLaughter (wife Leigh) of Brandon, MS, Bonnie Claire DeLaughter Farmer (husband Ryan) of Canton, MS, and David Andrew DeLaughter of New Orleans, LA; and by four great-grandchildren: Daisy Allise DeLaughter of Brandon, MS, Julia Bennett Farmer, Tate Cameron Farmer, and Declan Bruce Farmer of Canton, MS. Visitation begins at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Wildwood Baptist Church in Clinton, MS, followed by a 1:00 PM memorial service. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, MS under the direction of Sebrell Funeral Home of Ridgeland, MS.
