Obituary for Annie Jolene Mapp
Annie Jolene Mapp passed away on Monday, January 1, 2018, at Manhattan Nursing Home in Jackson. She was 78. Services will be at Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland on Friday, January 5, with visitation at 2:00 p.m., services at 3:00 p.m., with burial to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jolene was born to Joseph Hansell and Louise Rockett Mapp in Hattiesburg, MS, on December 23, 1939. She lived her early years there before moving to Jackson in 1959. She attended Murrah High School as part of the class of ’57. She also briefly attended Mississippi College in 1959. Her Murrah yearbook reflects her classmates’ affection for her through comments of “Everybody’s favorite,” “Jolliest Junior,” “One in a Million,” and “unforgettable.” She also sang alto in the school choir.

After living in Texas for a year after her mother’s death, Jolene returned to the home they bought on Arlington Street in Belhaven. In 1993, she joined the Hinds County Sheriffs Department, earning a promotion to Captain in 1998, making her Facility Commander at the Hinds County Detention Center. She also earned a special commendation from the US Justice Department for outstanding professional service during the trial of Byron de la Beckwith in Batesville.

After retiring from the Sheriffs Department in 2002, Jolene enjoyed her friends, her home, and her neighborhood until moving to Harmony Court Assisted Living, where she lived until 2015. From there, she moved to Manhattan.

Jolene was predeceased by her parents and her only brother William Rockett Mapp. Those left behind to remember her wicked sense of humor and razor-sharp wit are nephew Laurence (Kecia) Mapp of Centennail, CO; nieces Sandra Elam, Gordonsville VA; Linda (Adam) Malcolm, Gaithersburg, MD; Pamela (Glenn) Kelly, Frederick, MD; and cousins Kaye Rockett and Barbara Rockett (Andy) Boone of Jackson.

Pallbearers are Laurence Rockett Mapp, Devan Rockett Mapp, Nathaniel Rockett Mapp, Cecil Douglas Odom, Joseph Franklin Odom, and Douglas Archer Odom. In honor of her love for her precious Yorkie, Toto, donations in her memory can be made to the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF), 1317 Greymont St., Jackson, MS 39202, or a charity of one’s choice.
