Obituary for Anne Yerger Hooker
Anne Yerger Hooker, passed away on St. Patrick’s day, Sunday, March 17, 2019. She was 72 years old and is survived by her husband, best friend, and devoted and tireless caregiver, Charles H. Hooker Jr., by her oldest son Charles H. Hooker III (and his wife, Angie Fox, and their children, Auden and August Fox), by her younger son William Yerger Hooker (and his wife Sarah Psimas Yerger, and their daughter, Evelyn Yerger), her brother, Dr. Buford Yerger (and Gay Yerger), and her sister Helen Blacklock (and Dr. Bob Blacklock). Anne was a beautiful pillar in the community of Jackson, Mississippi, where she was born and lived virtually all of her life. She graduated from Murrah High School and the Mississippi University for Women.
Anne and her husband were very active in the arts and music (especially jazz), as well as local non-profits, politics, and racial reconciliation work. Her presence was especially strong at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral where she worked as a director of Christian education, among many other titles and duties, over a decades-long career. Anne lived heroically with multiple sclerosis for approximately 42 years, a disease she never let define her or stand in the way of her deep joy, generous spirit, and gratitude for all life has to offer. She epitomized kindness, generosity, empathy, love, equanimity, and a humble sense of humor. Her ability to exude these qualities persistently and in the face of hardship was truly infectious and inspiring. Family and friends of all stripes, colors, and creeds always were a profound focus of her life, and she died peacefully at home surrounded by a number of them. In lieu of flowers, any donations would be appreciated to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral or the Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Jackson.
