A celebration service of her life will be held at Summit United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 6, 2024. Visitation will be held at 10:30 just prior to the service. A private burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Summit earlier in the day. Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS will be handling the arrangements.
Miss Hurst was born on August 6, 1922 at home in Auburn, MS to John Irvin and Ary Carruth Hurst. Her parents were both educators, and they eventually moved to live on the campus of Southwest Community College. Her dad was a
professor and a coach and her mom, a pianist and organist. Miss Hurst attended Southwest Community College for two years and then attended Millsaps College where she received a degree in Mathematics. She went on to graduate from Ole Miss with a master’s degree in Mathematics. After graduation, Miss Hurst spent most of her adult life inspiring young adults by teaching Mathematics in Lake Charles, LA, then in Palo Alto, CA. After retiring from the California School System, she moved to Mississippi to be close to her family and care for her elderly father. She began teaching again at Parklane Academy in McComb, MS. She was selected Start Teacher multiple times in her teaching career and has received many letters sharing
the life-changing impact she has had on many lives.
She was very active at Summit United Methodist Church where she served as pianist and organist. Her social passions extended to the Flowers Lovers Club where she served as president. She loved to support any activities involving Southwest Community College. The school even honored her and her twin sister by naming the auditorium "The Aylene and Adene Hurst Auditorium." She, along with her sister were named “Alumnus of the Year” in 1984.
Ms. Hurst is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Aylene Hurst. She is survived by many precious cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summit United Methodist Church, Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, or Wesley Theological Seminary in Jackson.
