Obituary for A. Horace Brewer
Horace Brewer died of heart failure on Friday, January 15, 2021 at St. Dominic Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was 78.
A native of Corinth, MS and born February 21, 1942, he was the son of the late Earl and Addie Skelton Brewer. He was a 1960 graduate of Corinth High School. He then completed his undergraduate studies at Northeast Mississippi Community College and Delta State University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965. In 1967, he earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law.
While still as student in law school, Horace was elected to a four year term as Alcorn County Prosecuting Attorney. He was then elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives where he served until 1976. Choosing not to seek re-election, he continued in the private practice law until 1979, at which time he was appointed to the position of Administrative Judge with the Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Commission. In 1985, he returned to the private practice law and since that time has devoted the bulk of his practice to workers’ compensation on behalf of claimants.
Horace was a past president of the Alcorn County Bar Association and held memberships in the Hinds County Bar Association, Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association, The Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Mississippi Bar Association and American Bar Association. Also, he had been admitted to practice in all state courts and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Mississippi.
He was the recipient of the Outstanding Young Man of Corinth award, 1970-1971; recipient of the Kenneth G. Perry Professionalism Award, 2012; and inducted into the Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Hall of Fame, 2017.
Horace was a Methodist man of faith and attended Madison United Methodist Church until Covid restrictions prevented him from doing so.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Michael Alan Brewer and his brothers, W.J. Brewer and Troy Brewer.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy Milner Brewer; son, Stephen Lane Brewer; grandchildren, Taylor Brewer, Travis Brewer, Philip Brewer, and Alex Brewer; great granddaughter, Skylar Brewer; sister-in-law, June Brewer; his best friends, John Hopkins and Tom Webb; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Natchez Trace Memorial Park.
