Obituary for Stephen Gregory Johnson
Stephen Gregory Johnson, 67, of D’Iberville, Mississippi died on August 24, 2016 after an eight month battle with cancer. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2016 at Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS with interment to follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Stephen was born May 22, 1949 in Jackson, MS to the late Walter Giles Johnson, Jr. and Bettie Horrell Johnson. He graduated from Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in business from Mississippi State University in 1971. He became a professional golfer traveling on the “Space Coast Tour” in Florida in the 1970’s playing alongside some other young players such as Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller. He and Fuzzy remained friends and would later enjoy bonefishing together in the Florida Keys.

Stephen left the pro circuit, and embarked on a long career in the golf industry. He represented numerous golf and clothing lines such as Powerbuilt, Mizuno, Nike, Sun Mountain, Lee Clothing and also Derby Caps where he served as Vice-President of Sales in Louisville, Kentucky. His first love was always golf, but he also had a lifelong infatuation with hunting, fishing and firearms. Stevie enjoy fishing even near the end, taking numerous trips with his brother Walter and their close friend Tommy O’Keefe in search of snapper, redfish and trout. In 2009 he enjoyed a great trip to South Dakota with his brothers and nephews catching walleye and pike. Just this past May of 2016, he had a great road trip west with his brothers and Clay Blalack to Colorado where he climbed Pikes Peak on the Cogwheel Railroad.

Stephen started his golfing career at the Country Club of Jackson, but in 1984 he moved to Sugarland, Texas where he was Past Champion of the Fort Bend Country Club. Later in his early 60’s he left the golf business and worked in the seismic acquisition end of the oil & gas exploration business, obtaining permits in the burgeoning shale trends of Louisiana, Texas, Pennsylvania and Western New York State.

Stephen is survived by his mother, Bettie, his brother and best friend, Walter Giles Johnson, III of Gulfport, MS, his brother Charles G. Johnson and sister B.R. both of Jackson. Also surviving are three nieces, three nephews, two great-nephews and numerous aunts, cousins and friends who will all miss “Big Stevie” with his big smile and smooth swing. We are all sure that he is now joining his departed father Walter Giles, Jr. who will be eternally frustrated that someone has shown up who can beat him at their favorite game. Nothing but birdies and eagles from here on out. Rest in Peace to a true “gentle giant”.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
