Russell Porter Grant, Jr.
Born in 1943 at Ft. Sill, OK, Russ Grant grew up in a military family, living in various duty locations before finally settling in Jackson, MS, where he graduated from Provine High School in 1962. He earned acceptance to the United States Military Academy at West Point and excelled at social sciences and English while singing the Cadet Chapel Choir and Glee Club, among other extracurricular and academic activities. He graduated in May 1966 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Infantry Corps. That fall he married his high school sweetheart, Janice Rae Lockley, in a ceremony in Jackson, MS. Their first assignment was in Bamberg, Germany, as a Rifle Platoon Leader in the 4th Armored Division. While stationed in Germany, he served as the Post Civil Affairs advisor, coordinating official and informal relations between the US military and the German local and state governments. After his promotion to Captain, he received orders to serve a one-year tour in Vietnam in which he was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service. He returned home in 1969, and served in various Army assignments until 1972, upon which he resigned his active duty commission to attend Law School at the University of Mississippi and serve in the Mississippi Army National Guard. In 1974, Mr. Grant joined the law firm of Patterson & Patterson in Aberdeen, MS, where he worked anti-trust, securities fraud, and other legal matters. In the National Guard, he served assignments in the 155th Armored Brigade, including Detachment Commander and Brigade S-2. In 1980, he left law practice and became a Certified Petroleum Landman involved in leasing and title curative, a profession that he would pursue until his retirement in 2014. Among his positions in the industry, he worked for Hughes & Hughes Oil & Gas (later Hughes Eastern Petroleum) as in-house council and gas contracts/division orders manager, followed by private practice. Among his accomplishments, he served as President of the Mississippi Oil and Gas Lawyers Association, the Mississippi Association of Petroleum Landmen, and Chair of the Natural Resources Section of the Mississippi Bar Association. He is a former member of the Federalist Society and has been listed in Who’s Who in American Law. He was active in the Episcopal Church for over forty years, serving the congregations of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Aberdeen, MS and St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Jackson, MS as a member of the choir, Acolyte Warden, licensed Diocesan Lay Reader and Eucharistic Minister, and Verger. He was an avid reader of history and historical fiction, especially military history, a gourmet chef – and World Champion Red Beans and Rice cook – loved to travel, garden, and was a dedicated Ole Miss, Army, and Auburn football fan. He loved his family more than anything, loved his church, and loved God. Visitation will be held Monday, July 2, 2018, at 10:00am at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Jackson, with funeral services following at 11:00am. The Rev. Jennifer Deaton will officiate. Internment will be at the Mississippi Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Newton, MS. Sebrell Funeral Home of Ridgeland is in charge of local arrangements. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Janice (Lockley) Grant of Madison, MS; his son Lieutenant Colonel Russell Porter Grant, III and his wife Sari (Knoff) Grant, and two grandchildren, Sofia Garnett Grant and Henry Porter Grant, all of Colorado Springs, CO; his brother, John A. Grant of Houston, TX; and a niece, Kim Grant. His parents, Brigadier General Russell Porter Grant, Sr. and Mrs. Jimmie (Bell) Grant, preceded Mr. Grant in death.
