Martha Yerger André, a long-time resident of Jackson, Mississippi, died peacefully August 7, 2018, in Oxford with her family by her side. Born January 16, 1933, Martha was the daughter of Maye and George Sizer Yerger of Mound, Louisiana. In the ninth grade, she enrolled at All Saints’ Episcopal School in Vicksburg where she was named May Queen in her senior year. Martha attended LSU where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Her fiancé, Carl André was in graduate school there at that time. They married August 4, 1951, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Vicksburg. Martha and Carl moved to Denver while he was in the Air Force, and then settled in Jackson for many years. Martha was active in the Junior League of Jackson, the St. Andrew’s Episcopal School parents’ association, in her churches (St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral, and, later, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church), and in Le Déjeuner Luncheon Club. Perhaps her favorite avocation was painting. She studied art under a number of notable teachers and was a member of the Gaddis Group and the Mississippi Watercolor Society. As her art became more sought after, it was widely collected in Mississippi and beyond. After Carl’s death, Martha moved to Austin, Texas, to live near her daughter Sarah. Recently she was in Oxford, to be nearer her other children, Sigrid and Yerger. Martha was loved and admired by her family and many friends and will be sorely missed. She is survived by her daughter Sigrid Goodspeed of Oxford and Sigrid’s sons Connor and Daniel; her son Yerger André (Laura Johnson) of Oxford, and their children August and Elsie; her daughter Sarah André (Jason Neulander) of Austin, Texas, and their children Piper and Scarlett; her sister Elizabeth Wray (the late Dan Wray) of Ocala, Florida, and their children Catherine, Jennifer and James; her brother George Yerger (Betty Ann) of Heber Springs, Arkansas, and their children Susan and Sizer; and her sister and brother-in-law Sigrid and Jack Conway of Jackson, their son John (Jennifer), his children Benjamin and Julia and their mother Laurie Conway. A memorial service will be held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to André’s Fund at the Episcopal Recovery Program of the Diocese of Mississippi (P.O. Box 23107, 39225), or to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church (5400 Old Canton Road, 39211).
