Obituary for Dr. Aaron David Puckett
Dr. Aaron David Puckett, Jr., 59, of Gluckstadt, MS, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2016, at UMMC. Dr. Puckett was born February 2, 1957 at Greenville Air Force Base in Greenville, MS to Aaron David Puckett, Sr. and Martha Maxine Hairston Puckett. He was a 1975 graduate of Ocean Springs High School in Ocean Springs, MS. He attended Jackson County Junior College in Gautier, MS for two years before transferring to the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS where he was one of the earliest students in the Polymer Science department and graduated with his B.S. in 1980 and PhD. in 1986. He was a lifetime member of the USM Alumni Association. He married his high school sweetheart, Leslie O’Neill, on June 4, 1977 in Bossier City, LA. They have two children, Courtney Love and Eric David. He was a professor of Biomedical Materials Science at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry for 32 years and retired on July 1, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Leslie O. Puckett of Gluckstadt, MS; two children, Courtney McIlwaine (Jason) of Jackson, MS and Eric Puckett (Amy Reynolds) of Anchorage, AK; three grandchildren Liam and Spencer McIlwaine of Jackson, MS and Autumn Reynolds of Anchorage, AK; mother, Martha Maxine Puckett of Scooba, MS; one brother, Daniel Puckett (Kathie) of Picayune, MS.; three sisters, Suzanne Cassibry (Bob) of Daphne, AL, Sarah Cochran (Richard ) of Tampa, FL, and Samantha Martone (Mark) of Panama City, FL; mother-in-law, Jackie O’Neill, of Topton, PA; one brother-in-law, Pat O’Neill (Diane) of Charlotte, NC; one sister-in-law, Shaun Tyson (Recie) of Lancaster, CA; special friend, James Kelley of Gluckstadt, MS; furry children Ziggy and Finn; 18 nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Thomas F. O’Neill, and his father, Aaron David Puckett, Sr. A Celebration of Life gathering was held at the Puckett home instead of a funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to The Arbor Day Foundation or Community Animal Rescue and Adoption, Inc. in Jackson, MS.
